Honoring our Heroes

The brave die never, though they sleep in dust:
Their courage nerves a thousand living men.
~Minot J. Savage

Memorial Day is not about pool parties, back yard bbq’s, or trips to the beach. It isn’t a three day weekend because teachers need a break or the average Joe needs a break from the rat race. Memorial Day IS about a proclamation made in 1868 by General John Logan, national commander for the Grand Army of the Republic, to have flowers placed on the graves of Union and Confederate Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. After World War I, Memorial Day changed from honoring our Civil War soldiers, to all those Americans who had lost their lives fighting for our country.

Memorial Day is not about war. It is about people. People who bravely laid down their lives so we can be free. It is about honoring them and their sacrifices…..from those that died on that vast field in Gettysburg to the street battles in Iraq and the deserts on Afghanistan. Lets not forget our Military War Dogs! From the first war dog Stubby, A Pit Bull hero from WWI, to Cairo the Belgian Malinos Navy Seal who helped end Osama Bin Laden and the 4000 MWD’s that saved lives in Vietnam…these dogs deserve a moment of reflection!

3pm is the National Moment of Remembrance, put down your beer, get out of the pool and take a moment to think of the men, women and K9’s that have made the biggest sacrifice for our country.

And while you are at it, if you have a Veteran with you, give them a hug and thank them and their families for continuing the fight for American freedom. I honor these veterans and currently serving warriors everyday, and hope you do as well. Please keep in mind that the words Happy and Memorial Day, do not go together….the biggest oxymoron ever.

Thank you!

Perform, then, this one act of remembrance before this Day passes – Rememberthere is an army of defense and advance that never dies and never surrenders, but is increasingly recruited from the eternal sources of the American spirit and from the generations of American youth.  ~W.J. Cameron

My Mom told me today that she thinks I’m the best looking Malinois she knows. So I asked her how come we weren’t at Madison Square Gardens today and tomorrow so I could prove that to the world. She grumbled something about an inflated ego, a big head, and that we had work to do that didn’t include a beauty contest.

Beauty contest???????

15-16 February 2010 are the dates of the 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. It’s not just some beauty contest. Did you know that it is “…America’s second-longest continuously held sporting event” Yep…sporting event…it predates  the invention of basketball and the establishment of the World Series! It even predates the Iditarod.

Every year Mom, Pepper and I watch the show on the USA Network just to see who should be named Best in Show. Pepper and I find it sad that neither an Irish Terrier or a Belgian Malinois have ever won the honor.

I think we could be contenders!

The least they could have done was ask us to be in the commercial!

So tonight and tomorrow night go grab a beer and a seat in front of the TV with your human friends and tune into the  134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show!

I’m Thankful for:

  • Any kind of Ball, Frisbee, disc, tug, stuffy, squeaky or thing that I can play with.
  • Pepper, she taught me from when I first came into the house what the rules were and how to play like a Terrier.
  • My friends, it was hard picking a picture because I make so many through my job. Here is me with Bandit, Falcon and Emily.
  • Buteo Bay and everything that comes with it.
  • All the brave women, men and K-9’s that keep the United States free!
  • A sense of humor that keeps my mom laughing at me when I have too much energy for her!
  • My mom….she really is the coolest!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Big Boy Toy Show 025

November 10, 2009 marks the 234th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. Happy birthday to all the men, women and K9’s that are serving currently or have served in the USMC. Thank you for your dedicated service. Thank you for your valued history and your bravery in battle and in peace.

Dogs have been serving in the US Marine Corps since WWII. Doberman Pinchers were the original “Devil Dogs” They were essential “personel” in Vietnam, saving many lives on a daily basis. And today they serve countless missions to help our soldiers stay safe all over the world, but especially in today’s war zones.

So from this Malinois who doesn’t do much but fun tricks and keeping my mom safe and in a job, Happy Birthday to my US Marine Corps K9 buddies. You do work that most of us could only dream of. Thanks for protecting us and keeping us safe! Cheers and I’ll make sure mom raises a Leinie or two in your honor!

Need a hand picking out your pumpkin?

Halloween is tomorrow. It’s a fun holiday…..at least I thought it was until mom came home all giddy for some reason. I can’t believe what she has done to us! I never thought in a million years this would happen to me. Pepper is concocting a plan to make this all worthwhile, but frankly I’m embarrassed.

Of all the asinine, crazy, harebrained ideas she has had, this costume takes the cake. Thanks mom…I can’t go out in public like this…I just can’t.

Pepper here!

This is brilliant, absolutely brilliant! What better way is there to sneak up on those damn squirrels and infiltrate their army!!!! They can’t escape us…we can totally pull this off. Hey! Stop laughing at me!

You just wait and see I can take over the world, even in this outfit!

Have a safe and Happy Halloween…I’m going to go see if this is actually working for Pepper. I’ll let you know.

Mom says Cinco de Mayo isn’t that big a deal in Mexico…but we Americans get to celebrate it in honor of Mexico’s pride and heritage. Mom celebrates because she was born in Mexico. I’m wondering if Pennsylvania has a special holiday, that is where I was born……

This is one of those days where you have to go have a Mexican Cerveza…..and follow it up with a Leinenkugels!    Happy Cinco De Mayo!

HAPPY EASTER!!!!  I was excited this morning! I put at least two full bags of carrots out last night…mom was a little mad. When the alarm went off I couldn’t help but bounce off the bed and start spinning with excitement, damn that snooze button and the grumpy voice saying “Lay down!” All 5 of us did a quick search around the back yard before our walk, but nothing….. When Falcon, Pepper, Mom and I got back from our walk we saw a present on the front porch!

There was also a letter attached. So we let Bandit and Emily out and gathered so Pepper could read it to us.

Dear Leinie,

The squirrels informed me of your meeting and the carrot traps. Being the Easter Bunny can be dangerous work sometimes. One night a year to hide all those darn eggs and deliver all those baskets…you know Santa gets alot of credit but it isn’t like he is hiding the presents…Anyway, I appreciate the attention but I really wish you wouldn’t try to trap me. Set your sights on that Cadbury Bunny, ever since he started hanging out with the Hershey’s M&M guys it is like he joined some weird chocolate gang. Stay away from the Peeps though they can be dangerous!

I need you to pass on some information to your fellow dogs today. Tell them to stay out of the grass I put in the Easter Baskets…really it doesn’t taste good and can be pretty dangerous. I don’t want to hear about you or a bunch of your friends needing surgery because of it. Also remember that chocolate can be toxic to dogs. No chasing, catching or eating any of the baby animals that are being born this spring. (and I know about those Spectators in Ohio eating my brothers and sisters!!!!) If you find any plastic eggs when you are out at the park…I didn’t hide them for you, they are for the kids. Really, when you think of it Easter isn’t a very dog friendly holiday…..

So be good to Renée today and have fun working. Tell Renée I left her a chocolate rabbit on top of the refrigerator, out of your reach! Enjoy the sunshine and HAPPY EASTER!!!

Your’s for the day,

Easter Bunny

Not exactly what I was hoping for but that’s ok…mom just informed me that Easter isn’t all about the bunny anyway. That doesn’t mean I won’t go and try to catch him again next year though! Happy Easter everyone!

So a bunch of us got together the other day…a sort of meeting of the minds… to discuss this Easter bunny that mom has been going on about.

We came to a couple different conclusions:

  1. Pepper should never be in charge of the meetings. Those Terriers just want to take over the world, she had a whole ‘nother agenda.
  2. Emily is a schmooze and just wanted to suck up to mom and doesn’t really care about the Easter Bunny.
  3. I had the most access to the front and back yard so I was to go lay a trap for this bunny.
  4. Falcon is so tired from all the learning he was doing he just wanted a nap…but at least he’s learning some manners!
  5. Bandit makes a good look out, he was on the deck to make sure mom didn’t hear our plans.

Mom keeps eating jelly beans and the ears off chocolate rabbits and was a little discouraging when I asked her for the carrots so I could lay my trap.

Wish me happy hunting…sounds like this rabbit can be a bit elusive at times…
