Maggie, Me and Pepper

I grew up with Terriers. Irish Terriers…female Irish Terriers. The main one was Pepper who we lost in April and mom is still grieving about. I have heard a ton of stories about Pepper and the things she taught mom, the past couple months and there are lots of things I need to live up to.

I found mom crying earlier today and she sat me down and told me the other terrier in my life is now romping in the fields on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge with Pepper. Maggie was a 15 yr old Irish Terrier and belonged to my human grandparents. She was a cool old red head with a bit of attitude. She was also a veteran therapy dog and had been visiting an assisted living home for more then 10 years. She was the dog that sparked a conversation between my mom and her eye doctor and was ultimately the reason my mom went into dog training. And she was the reason for my mom meeting Pepper! I guess I owe her more then just teaching me a terrier way of life.

Although I know I’ll meet up with all my good friends someday, when I get to romp in the fields on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, but I sure do miss them a ton now!

I’ll go fetch mom a Guinness and we’ll toast the Irish red heads of the family, remember old times and bury another dog in our hearts.

THE BEST PLACE TO BURY A DOG

“There is one best place to bury a dog.
“If you bury him in this spot, he will
come to you when you call – come to you
over the grim, dim frontier of death,
and down the well-remembered path,
and to your side again.

“And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
him, nor resent his coming,
for he belongs there.

“People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by his
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing.

“The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master.”

Cheers to the Irish Terriers who are buried in my heart!
