Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!

In years past, I would let the Irish Terrier that lived here take over this spot. Sadly she passed last year but still lives on in our memory and mom will surely raise a pint or two in her honor tonight.

Today is the day to drink one of the best beers ever…Guinness!!! It is a staple in our refrigerator.

Drink responsibly and have a great day everyone!

Maggie, Me and Pepper

I grew up with Terriers. Irish Terriers…female Irish Terriers. The main one was Pepper who we lost in April and mom is still grieving about. I have heard a ton of stories about Pepper and the things she taught mom, the past couple months and there are lots of things I need to live up to.

I found mom crying earlier today and she sat me down and told me the other terrier in my life is now romping in the fields on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge with Pepper. Maggie was a 15 yr old Irish Terrier and belonged to my human grandparents. She was a cool old red head with a bit of attitude. She was also a veteran therapy dog and had been visiting an assisted living home for more then 10 years. She was the dog that sparked a conversation between my mom and her eye doctor and was ultimately the reason my mom went into dog training. And she was the reason for my mom meeting Pepper! I guess I owe her more then just teaching me a terrier way of life.

Although I know I’ll meet up with all my good friends someday, when I get to romp in the fields on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, but I sure do miss them a ton now!

I’ll go fetch mom a Guinness and we’ll toast the Irish red heads of the family, remember old times and bury another dog in our hearts.

“There is one best place to bury a dog.
“If you bury him in this spot, he will
come to you when you call – come to you
over the grim, dim frontier of death,
and down the well-remembered path,
and to your side again.

“And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
him, nor resent his coming,
for he belongs there.

“People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by his
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing.

“The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master.”

— Ben Hur Lampman —
from the Portland Oregonian Sept. 11, 1925

Cheers to the Irish Terriers who are buried in my heart!

I didn’t know what I was getting into when I learned that I was going to be living with an Irish Terrier…I just didn’t know. But I learned a hell of alot. I need to go take care of my mom and fetch her a Guinness out of the fridge. She and Pepper went on one last car trip and said that I’ll see Pepper on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge…hopefully not for awhile though. I know you’ll see a lot of our friends up there. Thank you Pepper!

So raise a Guinness high tonight and celebrate a good dog!

So this time of year all I’m seeing are top 10 lists. Top ten favorite dog toys, top ten favorite doggy spas, top ten favorite dog names…etc. So of course I consulted with Mom we pulled together a top ten favorite beers list for 2009. Mom wanted to try them all again as I was making this list, I had to guard the fridge so she would be sober enough to help me type this out….

  1. Anything from the Leinenkugel Brewery!!!!!! This house isn’t picky, we like them all and so should you…or I’ll bit you….
  2. Guinness it isn’t just a beer to drink on St. Patrick’s day! Get someone to pour it right or be in awe of the widget in the draft bottles….how cool is the widget?!
  3. Gaelic Ale from Highland Brewing Company
  4. Pumpkinhead Ale from Shipyard Brewing Company
  5. 420 Extra Pale Ale from Sweetwater Brewery
  6. Longboard Island Lager from Kona Brewing Company
  7. Tusker Lager from East Africa Breweries LTD hard to find but brings back oh so many memories!
  8. Lucky Kat from Magic Hat Brewing Company Beer Kitty, Kitty!
  9. Yuengling Lager from Yuengling… their Black and Tan comes in a close second.
  10. Point Amber Classic from Stevens Point Brewery

There are a lot of good beers and Breweries out there. But one should always have a few of their favorites in the fridge for a rainy day….or a snowy day…or a hot day…or well any day that ends in y. Cheers and drink responsibly….

Mom said I could do a top ten list of my favorite dog toys next time…better start gathering and testing them out.

Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day!

But I concede already…I have an Irish Terrier in the house that thinks today is all about her and mom sure seems to be treating her extra special today…. so since she doesn’t have her own blog, I’ll let her take over mine just for today, while I go try to trap a Leprechaun under the shed. If you are wondering why I am relinquishing control to Pepper…find out what the Irish Terrier’s are really like at the Follow Me Dog Training LLC blog!

Pepper here, and the first thing everyone reading this blog should know is that Guinness is the beer of the Irish..none of that Leinenkugel stuff today.

If you aren’t spending the day; hugging an Irish dog, listening to Gaelic Storm, having a few pints of Guinness, and wearing green….I won’t pinch you, I’ll bite you!

Leinie here… I promise to never let Pepper take over the blog again…. Happy St. Patricks Day everyone!
